Earliest Known Photo of the Boston Marathon – 1904

Sammy Mellor leads a small field of runners at 22 miles of the 8th running of the Boston Marathon. There were more spectators, cyclists and horse-drawn carriages than runners. Mellor later dropped out of the race shortly after this photo was taken.
